A back massager is a device or an instrument that you use to massage the body. Back massagers work by stimulating circulation and relaxing stiff muscles, and they come with different programs that are designed to target a specific area of the body like lower, upper as well as a full back. They always have different heat options, intensities as well as vibration and as such, choosing one can leave you feeling overwhelmed.

While you should visit a doctor if you have persistent and severe back pain, most of the time, a back massager will be able to relieve you of mild and minor pain that often results from you hunching over the computer the entire day or after a gym session.

Massagers have been used across various cultures for decades and continue growing in popularity. They can be used as primary as well as for replacement theory. The good thing about having a back massager is that you don’t need any special skills to operate or a second person to do the job for you unlike in traditional massages.
If you get a back massager, the device should allow you to relax and should be convenient to use lack of which it wouldn’t make sense spending all that money on a massager that does not help you.

The disadvantage of using a handheld massager is that you have to use your hand which can be very tiring.

Belt massagers

Just as the name suggests, a belt massager is draped around your waist, shoulders and lower back. A belt massager will massage the part you want without you even using your hand unlike with handheld massagers.

TENS massagers

These are other types of handheld massagers used to relieve tension and knots in the body.

Criteria When Looking for A Back Massager

When it comes to buying a back massager, you will feel overwhelmed by the many products that are in the market. You, therefore, need some criteria to decide which one you are going to buy and the one that will work for you.

The shape of the massager

When picking out a back massager ensure that it has the right shape so that you can easily to reach the target area to relieve tension and pain. The different shapes of back massagers mean that they have different efficiency levels which will depend on the body part that you want to massage. As such ensure that you read reviews of each product before making a purchase so as to ensure that you are buying a massager that will help you get rid of tension, soreness as well as other back problems.

The size

The size comes into play depending on the kind of massage you want. Do you need a full back massager or one that only massages a specific area like the neck or legs? Do you want a massager that you can use at work or when on the road? When you think about all these things, the size of the massager matters. You, therefore need to find a massager that fits your needs.

Electric and non-electrical

Your budget will determine to a great extent whether you get an electrical or no electrical massager. For one, non-electrical massagers tend to be less expensive, and you can use them anywhere without the need to plug in or recharge the battery.

Electric back massagers, on the other hand, don’t need you to use your hands. You just need to plug it in or recharge and start the massage. As such, you need to decide the one that works to your convenience.

The type of massage nodes

The kind of massage you get to a great extent has everything to do with the type of nods on the massager. The different Shiatsu massagers are of different kinds, sizes as well as the number of nodes. Some combine different sizes and types while others have similar ones. When choosing a massager, ensure that you put this into consideration and go for a massager that has the right number as well as a set of nodes if you want that deep and intense massage.

The kind of massage

The kind of massage that you need will determine the massager that you get. Which body part seems to be bothering you the most? What pain are you experiencing? Is it dull or sharp? Do you experience stiffness in that area or just tension? Different massagers make use of different massaging techniques.

For instance, massagers that tend to make use of shiatsu techniques are recommended ones because this is the best deep tissue massage you will ever get. Massagers that use the kneading motion are great for the back. If you have pain in the neck, then it would be best to go for a massager designed for the specific area.

Percussion style massagers provide a thundering feeling on the back or any other part of the body and as such are ideal for deep intense massages. If you want a massage that is not intense, then there is no harm going for the gentler massagers.

If you want a massager that you can control either by setting the direction, pressure or motion, then a handheld massager will do since allows you to reach all the body parts and target specific tension areas directly.

Ease of use

When it comes to back massagers, the last thing you want is to buy a device that you will never use. The ease of use and adjustability are things to consider when buying a massager. At the end of it all, it all depends on your preferences.

The Vibration

Vibration is what adds that extra relief when you are having a massage. If you are looking to have a relaxing back massage, then look for a massager that has vibrations.

The price of the massager

The other important thing to consider is the price and price goes beyond how much the device costs. It about what device gives you more value for your money. If you have a problem with your back, then it would make more sense going for a more expensive unit that provides full back massage. If you want a massager that you can use on your shoulders, neck, back and other body parts, then a multifunctional device makes more sense.

Other additional features

While all back massagers do the same job, additional features set them apart. Additional features like auto-shut off, pre-programmed nodes, automatic adjustments and heat all add something to the massager.

An added heat function in a massager helps stimulate pain sensors and block pain. It also helps to increase blood circulation in the body. A heat option is usually a great additional feature for comfort, especially during cold days.

Most back massagers have an auto shut off function where the massage turns off on its own after the time set has elapsed. As such, when getting a back massager, you want to get a back massager that has a time setting so that you can relax and even nap during a massage. To prevent overheating, a majority of electric massagers have an auto switch off function.

Another added feature to look for is intensity adjustability where the more customised the settings are, the more versatile the massager is. If you want a massager that you can use as a family or one that you can use on any day, then go for one that has an adjustable intensity setting.

If you happen to choose a massager that has slow, medium or fast settings, it will enable you to customise the speed to exactly what you want.

Back massagers are either cord or cordless and as such it is up to you to decide whether you want a portable device that you can carry with you anywhere or one that you can use at the comfort of your own home. Most back massagers are used in the car, and as such you want to go for a massager that you can use in the office, home or when you are on the road. One thing to remember also is that battery powered massagers are more convenient because they only need to be recharged and because of that can be carried to the office or in the car.

  2. I’ve tried Snailax and Zyllion Shiatsu massagers and they just didn’t massage and support my low back good enough. My L5S1 disc is mostly degenerated. I bought a Massage Lynx Shiatsu massager a couple weeks ago on amazon because it has a bunch of massage nodes working all at once to support your whole back. It feels more thorough with all those different size nodes working together adjustable to a high speed and it supports my low back way better! I don’t have to use the Massage Lynx for as long as I needed to use the others.
